Cheddar Streusel Apple Pie

This is award winning apple pie.
A cheesy crust with a cheesy streusel topping and filled with melt in your mouth cinnamon apple filling.
The cheese and the apples really compliment and elevate one another in this recipe.
And the cheese adds a pleasant sweet chewiness to the crust and the streusel.
This pie recipe has been a family favorite of ours for years. I originally discovered it in my BHG magazine.
And my family requests it every Thanksgiving; everyone who tries it falls in love with it.
My husband took it to work once for pie day and one
of his coworkers desperately called us the day before
Thanksgiving to request the recipe for my amazing cheesy apple pie.

Crust

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup butter-flavored shortening
  • ½ cup finely shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3-4 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

  1. Prepare your filling and your cheddar streusel topping.
  2. Make the crust: In a bowl, combine your flour and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter flavored shortening with a pastry blender until it resembles coarse crumbs, add the cheese and mix it in.
  4. Add the ice cold water by tablespoon and mix with a fork until the dough starts to clump.
  5. Press it together with your hands to form a ball.
  6. Cover it with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for 1 hr.
  7. Pull your dough out and prepare a work surface with flour and a rolling pin.
  8. Roll out your dough adding more flour as needed to prevent it from sticking.
  9. Use your pie pan to measure the size of your dough.
It should extend 1 inch beyond your pie pan.
  10. Once the dough is rolled out, taking a spatula, run it underneath your dough to make sure that it is separated from the counter.
  11. Slightly flour the top of your dough and your rolling pin.
  12. Transfer your dough to the pan by placing your rolling pin over the edge of your dough and lifting the edge roll it over your rolling pin and lift it off the counter.
  13. Place it over your pie pan and press the crust in making sure it is firmly set against the pie pan.
  14. Use the overhanging crust to fill in gaps if needed, and pinch the dough around the edges to form a crust.
  15. Pour the prepared filling into your crust pressing it to make sure it is evenly distributed.
  16. Then pour the prepared streusel over the top and spread it to make sure it is evenly covering the apples.
  17. Cover the crust with foil, set the pie on a baking pan
  18. Preheat your oven to 375℉
  19. Bake for 40 minutes covered with the foil, then take it off and continue to bake for another 20 minutes.
